Patriarch’s Ponds, a Moscow heat wave, and Bulgakov, forever. What if Woland showed up in Moscow today? That’s where the Ball of Shadows started — not a retelling of the novel, but an update of it, where the guests became the characters and the whole hotel turned into a portal between worlds.

We actually tracked down Bulgakov’s heir, cleared the rights for real — and off it went. Every floor had its own sin: crypto, the info-course hustle, cosmetic surgery, the cult of success — everything Moscow 2.0 runs on. 120 performers, a thousand guests, and an atmosphere where you honestly couldn’t tell the actors from the people who’d just shown up "for the ball."

In the partner lounge, a mirrored room with two ballerinas — one light, one dark. Striking, beautiful, and right on theme: everybody’s got a shadow of their own.

We also ran a networking game: everyone got a playing card at the door — queens, jacks, aces — and had to find their match. Guests really did wander the room hunting for "their shadow," striking up conversations, flirting, dancing.

And the final touch: long after the party, people found cards tucked in their pockets that read, "I've been watching you." From Woland, of course.

A week of flashbacks, and a flood of posts along the lines of "what even just happened?!"

For one night, we really did open a portal — between the real and the uncanny, light and shadow, the past and Moscow right here, right now.

A ball where everyone met themselves — just a slightly different version.
